Synopsis

Xiaogao is searching for love — or at least for proof that she won't end up alone. Friends, parents, admirers, and strangers turn love into a kaleidoscope of societal expectations: marriage, money, fertility, obedience, and the promise of a child.

As her encounters shift from flirtation into increasingly absurd performances, her body and desires become objects to be observed, measured, and corrected. With deadpan humor, surreal tableaux, and experimental imagination, Xiaogao gonna die LONELY tells the story of a young woman caught between the longing to be loved and the fear of ending up alone.

Junyan Gao

Junyan Gao is from Shanxi and has a background in French language and literature. In her work, she follows her curiosity and love of wandering, unafraid to embrace anger, doubt, and confusion. Her films center on female perspectives and experiences, exploring loneliness, desire, and passion with honesty and openness.

As a writer and producer, she made the short film Seeding, Blossoming, Fruiting, which has been screened at festivals including the Leeds International Film Festival, Norwegian Short Film Festival, Nashville Film Festival, Bogotá Short Film Festival, Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival, and FANCINE – Fantastic Film Festival of Málaga.
